Summary

*4。5 stars*To this day I've never seen an Avengers movie, and had only heard the names of Norse gods mentioned in passing。 Neil Gaiman's book is exactly what it purports to be: a fun, easy retelling of Scandinavian myths, totally appropriate and useful for someone who's jumping in blind。 There is very little discussion of humans here, except for their first conception, with most of the stories revolving around the gods Odin, Thor, and Loki, as well as other magical creatures like giants, dwarves *4。5 stars*To this day I've never seen an Avengers movie, and had only heard the names of Norse gods mentioned in passing。 Neil Gaiman's book is exactly what it purports to be: a fun, easy retelling of Scandinavian myths, totally appropriate and useful for someone who's jumping in blind。 There is very little discussion of humans here, except for their first conception, with most of the stories revolving around the gods Odin, Thor, and Loki, as well as other magical creatures like giants, dwarves, and elves。 Though I've never seen the movies, Loki was 100% Tom Hiddleston in my mind and I am not sorry。 As in Greek myth, the Norse gods do all kinds of things we might not consider "benevolent": for example, I was furious at the gods' treatment of Fenrir, who, at least in Gaiman's version, was just a big friendly dog until they betrayed him (if only they'd opted to play fetch instead, maybe they could have avoided Ragnarök)。 Now that I have a sense of the major figures and stories, I feel much more prepared to jump into an Edda (well, at least the prose Edda) if the mood strikes me。 。。。more

Norse mythology broken down into layman's terms & small stories。 If you're new to mythology, this is easily understandable。 Norse mythology broken down into layman's terms & small stories。 If you're new to mythology, this is easily understandable。 。。。more

So I am finishing up Neil Gaiman's book Norse Mythology and seeing slightly unsettling but incredibly cool parallel between Christianity, but more so, the ACTUAL geologic history of Earth。 (Fellow geologist and geology fans - for reference, I am talking Snowball Earth, and the chaotic Earth of fire and volcanoes and steam time frame of Baby Earth that also has a name but which can't think of any the moment)。This is Gaiman's retelling of the traditional Norse myths, so it stays pretty true to the So I am finishing up Neil Gaiman's book Norse Mythology and seeing slightly unsettling but incredibly cool parallel between Christianity, but more so, the ACTUAL geologic history of Earth。 (Fellow geologist and geology fans - for reference, I am talking Snowball Earth, and the chaotic Earth of fire and volcanoes and steam time frame of Baby Earth that also has a name but which can't think of any the moment)。This is Gaiman's retelling of the traditional Norse myths, so it stays pretty true to the source material - at least what I have read of one of the more prominent Edda translations - but I hadn't yet managed to read the Edda's version of Ragnarok, hence the mind blown thing。 Becauseif the translations are as true as anything can be to the original source material/stories passed down verbally a millennia or two ago (which is always a shot in the dark but what can you do) and these stories really do originate from。。。 I wanna say 1100 AD? Maybe? Either way, WAAAAAAAY way before there was officially such a thing as Geology, much less any sort of scientific theory on the origins of the universe because Galileo doesn't show up until the 1500s。Well。 Considering how vague and loose any theory of time was during those early days of Gaia and the fluid aspect of age applied to basically *any* god or goddess。。。Seriously。 Mind。 Blown。 🤯 。。。more

A good counterpoint to The Witch’s Heart。

Listened to the audio on a road trip with my teenage boys。 First real Norse exposure。 I felt like it was well-written but not having any passion for Norse mythology, there wasn’t much to grab us or keep us overly enthralled。 The stories are kind of silly and when they are just about Loki and Thor’s respective shenanigans, they are just that…。silly and short。 When the lore contained explanations for the creation, earthquakes, etc, it led to some interesting thoughts about the purpose of some stor Listened to the audio on a road trip with my teenage boys。 First real Norse exposure。 I felt like it was well-written but not having any passion for Norse mythology, there wasn’t much to grab us or keep us overly enthralled。 The stories are kind of silly and when they are just about Loki and Thor’s respective shenanigans, they are just that…。silly and short。 When the lore contained explanations for the creation, earthquakes, etc, it led to some interesting thoughts about the purpose of some stories and beliefs。 。。。more

This was a series of vignettes regarding a story of the Norse Gods。 Occasionally, they would refer back to one another, but they were easily maintained as stand alone short stories。 I love it!

2。5! I enjoyed a few stories, but it was just okay。 Thor and Loki are humorous together, however, I guess I was just expecting more。

Finally。 A Neil Gaiman book I like。 (I know。) Listened to the audiobook; it's nice when the author wants to read their own work。 Finally。 A Neil Gaiman book I like。 (I know。) Listened to the audiobook; it's nice when the author wants to read their own work。 。。。more

Didn’t expect much from this because I’ve never really been interested in this sort of thing, but Neil Gaiman can make me love anything I suppose

Norse mythology might be my favourite。 Gods are arseholes but that's okay because they're metaphorical。 As is Ragnarok for the cycles of world ending catastrophes like the ice age。 I can't see fundamentalism being weaponised to be divisive。 Rather neat。 There's also plenty of excellent dog names here。 Dibs on Fenris。I've never been a big fan of Gaiman's fairy taley storytelling but it's perfect for retelling mythologies。 This book is great。 Norse mythology might be my favourite。 Gods are arseholes but that's okay because they're metaphorical。 As is Ragnarok for the cycles of world ending catastrophes like the ice age。 I can't see fundamentalism being weaponised to be divisive。 Rather neat。 There's also plenty of excellent dog names here。 Dibs on Fenris。I've never been a big fan of Gaiman's fairy taley storytelling but it's perfect for retelling mythologies。 This book is great。 。。。more

Neil Gaiman does it again! An excellent collection of short stories, beautifully ordered across the start and end of time。 The claims of this reading like a bardic tale are true。。。 each story is self-contained, yet compellingly drawing you on until the next tale。。。

I had only the barest exposure to Norse mythology before reading this book。 Gaiman included a glossary and wrote the stories so they were accessible to a novice like me。 The book left me wanting to learn more。

。。。more

I could not put this down。It's essentially a retelling of Norse myths, so if you know them, you know the stories。However, Gaiman's personal touch is what made this really satisfying。 Excellent writing style, laugh out loud moments (predictably most involved Thor and Loki), and a fantastic characterisation of the Norse gods。Loved it。 I could not put this down。It's essentially a retelling of Norse myths, so if you know them, you know the stories。However, Gaiman's personal touch is what made this really satisfying。 Excellent writing style, laugh out loud moments (predictably most involved Thor and Loki), and a fantastic characterisation of the Norse gods。Loved it。 。。。more

I have read several stories of mythology, mostly Greek and some Roman, but I haven't really read much in terms of Norse mythology。 I have read other stories where the Norse gods and such are included, but not a lot of the actual myths。 I enjoyed the way Gaiman put together these stories, but the Norse myths are just strange to me。 They don't fully make sense the way they play out。 So, I did enjoy Gaiman's telling, but not the myths themselves。 I have read several stories of mythology, mostly Greek and some Roman, but I haven't really read much in terms of Norse mythology。 I have read other stories where the Norse gods and such are included, but not a lot of the actual myths。 I enjoyed the way Gaiman put together these stories, but the Norse myths are just strange to me。 They don't fully make sense the way they play out。 So, I did enjoy Gaiman's telling, but not the myths themselves。 。。。more

Not my favorite of Gaiman's works。 He is so good at coming up with unique concepts, it's hard for me to see the point of these retellings。 I'd rather read something new。 Well written, of course, but couldn't help feeling like I've heard this all before。 Not my favorite of Gaiman's works。 He is so good at coming up with unique concepts, it's hard for me to see the point of these retellings。 I'd rather read something new。 Well written, of course, but couldn't help feeling like I've heard this all before。 。。。more

Listened to the audiobook, Gaiman did a great job with the reading。 It’s interesting to see how timeless myths are, and how they show what was important to the people who wrote them。 The ending was nice as well。 Even though it’s a collection of myths there’s still a beginning and end which makes it more of an enjoyable read。
